Sheffield Wednesday have extended young defender Mackenzie Maltby’s contract before sending him on loan to Scarborough Athletic. The move keeps the academy graduate tied to the Owls while giving him the chance to gain regular senior experience, rather than remain on the fringes of the first team.

Maltby, a centre-back who joined Wednesday as a child and captained their under-18 side, had signed his first professional deal in 2023. His initial one-month spell at National League North side Scarborough was later extended until December, and he subsequently returned to the club for the rest of the season after recovering from a hamstring injury.
