YouTube Premium and Music Subscribers Pass 150 Million as Ad Revenue Tops $11 Billion in Q3
YouTube has passed 150 million subscribers across YouTube Premium and YouTube Music, strengthening its position as both an advertising and subscription business. Alphabet chief executive Sundar Pichai announced the milestone alongside the company’s third-quarter results.
The combined subscriber total includes trials, and YouTube does not disclose how many subscribers use each service. YouTube advertising revenue exceeded $11.2 billion in the quarter, up from $10.3 billion a year earlier and roughly level with the previous quarter. Google also said more than 20 million videos are uploaded daily, and highlighted new creator tools, short-form series and advertising growth on connected TVs.
In short
- YouTube Premium and Music passed 150 million subscribers, including trials.
- YouTube ad sales topped $11.2 billion in the third quarter.
- More than 20 million videos are uploaded to YouTube each day.
Explained simply
YouTube is a video-sharing platform owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet. It earns money from adverts shown alongside videos and from paid subscriptions that offer benefits such as fewer adverts or access to music.
YouTube Premium and YouTube Music are separate paid services, but the company reports their subscribers together and includes people on free trials. It has not said how many people use each service, so the combined figure does not show how those subscriptions are divided.
The figures matter because they show how YouTube’s paid services sit alongside its large advertising business. Creators upload videos to the platform, while advertisers pay to reach viewers across phones, computers and connected televisions.
