Zack de la Rocha: Turnstile Are a “Bridge” to Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and The Clash
Zack de la Rocha says Turnstile can act as a “bridge” for younger listeners to discover earlier punk and hardcore bands. He sees the genre’s resurgence as a chance for new fans to explore the music’s roots, while noting he cannot predict whether it will have the same impact as before.
Speaking at a Barcelona exhibit of photographer Glen E. Friedman’s work, de la Rocha named Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Negative Approach and The Clash as groups listeners might find through Turnstile. He also credited Friedman’s persistence with helping Bad Brains gain visibility, and said Turnstile could not exist without the band’s influence. Friedman said musicians can use their platforms to speak up and improve the world; Turnstile recently performed at a Washington Monument event attended by 60,000 people in support of humanitarian aid to Palestine, Sudan and Lebanon.
