The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced that its 39th edition will open on 26 October with Zeze Takahisa's music drama "Sukiyaki," while South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho's zombie horror film "Colony" will close the festival on 4 November. The lineup underscores TIFF's continued focus on both homegrown Japanese cinema and acclaimed Asian genre filmmaking, with "Colony" arriving fresh from a celebrated Cannes premiere.

"Sukiyaki" dramatises the true story behind the globally famous 1963 Japanese pop song of the same name, sung by Kyu Sakamoto, which spent three weeks atop the US Billboard charts; the film stars Okada Junichi, Matsuzaka Tori and Nakano Taiga and opens in Japanese cinemas on 25 December. "Colony," from the director of "Train to Busan," depicts a biological weapon unleashing a zombie hive mind inside a Seoul skyscraper and was a box-office hit in South Korea. TIFF also confirmed Takashi Yamazaki's "Godzilla Minus Zero," sequel to the Oscar-winning "Godzilla Minus One," will screen as a special Centerpiece presentation, marking the first Japanese production shot for IMAX. The festival runs from 26 October to 4 November 2026.
