Indie Publisher Will ‘Safeguard’ Devs by Making PS5 Physical Games for All Eligible Titles

Push Square ·

Chinese indie publisher Astrolabe Games has issued a "manifesto" pledging to release physical PS5 editions of all its eligible upcoming titles until Sony stops manufacturing discs in January 2028. The move is framed as a way to "safeguard developers' creations" and support physical media fans, and comes amid wider industry anxiety about Sony's decision to end PS5 disc production, even though physical sales have become a niche market.

Astrolabe, which is based in Shanghai and known for niche titles like BlazBlue Entropy Effect X and Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog, says it will pursue boxed releases "till the last day" possible, though it caveats that some games may only get releases in select territories and that the pledge depends on games meeting Sony's minimum order requirements, typically in the thousands of units. Its upcoming physical slate includes Gurei later this year and Fall Up in early 2027, with Sony reportedly still allowing re-orders after the cut-off provided manufacturing begins beforehand. The publisher's commitment comes despite only seven physical titles in 2026 having sold more than 100,000 copies.

In short

  • Move aims to support developers amid Sony's physical disc phase-out
  • Only seven 2026 physical titles have topped 100,000 sales

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Physical media provides irreplaceable cultural preservation, ensuring games remain playable indefinitely regardless of platform holder decisions or service closures. More fundamentally, physical ownership grants consumers genuine agency—they can resell, gift, or access their games without corporate gatekeeping or internet dependence. Astrolabe's commitment expresses principled opposition to industry concentration of power.

The case against

Physical manufacturing diverts resources to an economically obsolete format: only seven PS5 titles sold over 100,000 physical copies in 2026, confirming genuine niche demand. Publishers face mounting costs for production, storage, and distribution that could instead fund game development. Digital distribution better serves actual consumer behaviour whilst reducing environmental waste from manufacturing and shipping.

Explained simply

Sony will stop manufacturing PlayStation 5 discs in January 2028, ending physical game releases for the console. The games industry has increasingly shifted towards digital downloads in recent years, though some players still prefer owning physical copies of games.

The shift away from physical media has raised concerns about preservation and consumer choice. Many worry that once online services are eventually shut down, players will lose access to digital games they have purchased, since there is no physical copy to retain. Physical game sales now represent only a small part of the overall market, but some publishers see value in continuing physical releases whilst possible.

Some indie publishers have responded to Sony's deadline by committing to accelerated physical releases. These efforts reflect anxieties about game preservation and access in a digital-only future.
