Spain midfielder Gavi has said he does not believe Argentina's Leandro Paredes should face suspension over his part in a post-match confrontation following the World Cup 2026 final, which Spain won 1-0. The incident, which occurred as Spain celebrated their victory, has led Fifa to appoint a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate, with any player or coach involved potentially facing a ban and the Argentine Football Association risking a fine.

Paredes appeared to push Spain's Eric Garcia by the throat and later shoved substitute Gavi to the ground, while Argentina team-mates Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, were also involved in the fracas. Gavi told El Partidazo de COPE that a red card during the match would have been the "most logical" response but argued football has a physical, aggressive side and suspension was unwarranted. Fifa's system briefly and incorrectly showed Paredes had been sent off, before confirming no disciplinary action was taken during the game itself; Argentina's Enzo Fernandez was dismissed in the final for a second yellow card.

In short

  • Gavi says Argentina's Paredes shouldn't be suspended over post-final scuffle.
  • Fifa has launched a disciplinary investigation into the incident.
  • Paredes was briefly, then incorrectly, shown as sent off on Fifa's system.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Football is an inherently physical sport where emotions run high, particularly in a World Cup final. Whilst the incident was regrettable, a red card during the match would have been the proportionate response at the time; retrospective suspension weeks later for post-match conduct seems excessive. The sport must acknowledge the contextual reality that players experience intense emotional reactions in such circumstances, and disciplinary measures should reflect the distinction between gameplay conduct and post-match reactions that, whilst wrong, are human responses to competitive intensity.

The case against

FIFA's disciplinary codes exist precisely to maintain standards of conduct and safety across all moments of a match and its aftermath. Physically assaulting another player—including choking or throwing a player to the ground—constitutes serious misconduct regardless of timing, and suspension is necessary to enforce the principle that violent behaviour carries consequences. Allowing post-match misconduct to escape significant punishment sets a dangerous precedent at sport's highest level, particularly at a World Cup final watched globally, and undermines respect for professional standards that protect all players.

Explained simply

Spain and Argentina are two of international football’s leading teams, and they met in the 2026 World Cup final. Spain won 1–0, but a confrontation broke out after the match as Spain celebrated. Several players and Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala were reported to have been involved.

Leandro Paredes is an Argentina midfielder, while Gavi and Eric Garcia play for Spain. FIFA, football’s international governing body, can investigate incidents and impose suspensions or fines. A red card during a match can lead to a player being sent off; Enzo Fernández was dismissed in the final after receiving a second yellow card.
