Finn Wolfhard, the "Stranger Things" actor known for his own indie rock projects, has given a fresh update on his long-in-the-works biopic about the Replacements, the influential and famously chaotic Minneapolis punk band. Speaking to Billboard, Wolfhard said the project is "going great" and that he and his producers are now searching for a director, suggesting he does not plan to helm the film himself despite prior directing experience. The update matters because it signals real progress on adapting one of rock's most notoriously self-destructive and hard-to-dramatise stories for the screen.

Wolfhard acquired the rights to Bob Mehr's acclaimed 2016 book "Trouble Boys" and is co-writing the screenplay with his father, Eric. He explained their approach is to treat the band members as fictional characters to avoid clichéd biopic tropes, aiming for something "contained" and authentic rather than a typical rise-and-fall narrative. He also reflected on his personal connection to the band's ethos of self-destructive authenticity, while noting he does not use the substances that fuelled the Replacements' turmoil, mindful of the pitfalls facing former child stars. No director or cast has yet been confirmed.
