Facebook considers giving up and becoming TikTok
Facebook will test a redesigned, video-first experience later this year that opens directly into full-screen video for some users, a move widely resembling TikTok’s format. The change matters because Meta is trying to prevent Facebook from losing relevance as users, conversations and commerce increasingly shift towards video-led platforms.
The test will begin in countries where video is especially popular, with a possible US expansion next year; Meta has not shown the proposed interface. Meta’s platforms collectively lost 20 million users in the first quarter of 2026, while TikTok reached one billion monthly users only three years after launch. Facebook is also launching a Marketplace Seller app, expanding its Reddit-like Forum app for Groups, and introducing a free selfie-verified badge alongside the paid Meta Verified subscription, which starts at $11.99 a month.
- Facebook will test a TikTok-style full-screen video homepage.
- Meta is responding to falling users and stronger video rivals.
- New seller tools and free verification are also launching.
