Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is receiving a new downloadable expansion that adds two civilisations, more than 25 maps and other content. Its scope and timing have prompted comparisons with an expansion reportedly cancelled last year, suggesting that some of its ideas may have been repurposed rather than abandoned.

The DLC is called Knights of Cross and Rose and introduces the Knights Templar and the House of Wettin as playable civilisations. Alongside the new factions and maps, it includes further gameplay content, extending support for the remastered real-time strategy game several years after its release.
