Hodgkinson & Asher-Smith in GB squad for Europeans

BBC Sport · 4 hours ago

Keely Hodgkinson, Dina Asher-Smith and Katarina Johnson-Thompson headline a 98-strong Great Britain squad named for next month's European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, the first time the UK has hosted the event. All three had opted to skip the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with Hodgkinson and Asher-Smith aiming to defend their 800m and 100m European titles respectively, while Johnson-Thompson returns to the heptathlon after injury forced her out of the 2024 edition.

The squad, announced by performance director Paula Dunn, also features Birmingham-born Matt Hudson-Smith in the 400m, Georgia Hunter Bell and Laura Muir in the women's 1500m, plus Jake Wightman and Amber Anning. Jake Heyward is included despite Scotland's Josh Kerr opting out after his world-record mile run. The championships take place at Alexander Stadium from 10 to 16 August, and Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, returning from Achilles surgery, has hinted via social media that he will compete after winning the 1500m/5,000m double at the last three editions.
