Rangers begin a new managerial era under Derek McInnes on Friday against Dundee United, with fans expected to have little patience for further failure after two successive trophyless seasons despite heavy spending. McInnes replaces Danny Rohl, who departed by mutual agreement for Red Bull Salzburg in June following a collapse in form after the Scottish Premiership split, and the appointment is seen as an attempt to bring stability after a turbulent run of short-lived head coaches at Ibrox.

Rangers finished third last season, having previously spent a reported £40m without winning a trophy, and had already gone through Steven Gerrard's successors, including Russell Martin, whose troubled 17-match reign ended in the sack before he took charge at Leicester City. McInnes, a boyhood Rangers player between 1995 and 2000 who turned down the club in 2017, arrives having nearly led Hearts to a first Scottish top-flight title in decades, though his only major managerial honour remains the 2014 League Cup with Aberdeen. Former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday backed the timing of the appointment, saying McInnes is now a more rounded manager better equipped for the role.
