Apple won’t turn on any ‘restricted mode’ for missed lease payments

The Verge · 3 hours ago

Apple has confirmed it will not restrict the functionality of devices leased through its new Upgrade programme if customers miss payments, following concerns raised by a report on hidden code found in an iOS 27 beta. Apple spokesperson Brian Bumbery told The Verge that "there will be no restricted mode and/or there will be no limitations put on device functionality due to missed payments or default" under the scheme, directly addressing fears that leased devices could be remotely crippled.

The concern stemmed from 9to5Mac's discovery of code for an "App Managed Features" system, which reportedly would let financial partners perform ongoing status checks on a device and allow Apple's system services to trigger a "Restricted Mode" for customers not in good financial standing, locking out most apps except basics like Phone, the App Store, Clock, Settings and Wallet. The Upgrade programme itself, launched in partnership with buy-now-pay-later firm Klarna, lets customers lease a new iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch for a flat monthly fee with no interest; Klarna says missing three consecutive payments will instead lead to lease termination and a demand for the full outstanding balance, rather than any device lockout.

  • Apple denies it will remotely restrict leased devices over missed payments.
  • Fears arose from iOS 27 beta code enabling a "Restricted Mode".
  • Klarna says missed payments instead end the lease and demand full payment.
