Aisling O’Reilly Kane, 28, says she is seeking to change her legal sex back to female almost ten years after legally becoming male in Ireland. She says the process has left her uncertain about how official records, medical information and future healthcare would be handled, raising concerns about whether emergency staff would have enough information to treat her safely.

O’Reilly Kane, from Dublin and now living in Wicklow, has a passport recording her as male and a medical history including a mastectomy and years of testosterone treatment. She says that after attending the first Detrans Awareness Day in Washington in March, she feels she is in a “legal no man’s land”, particularly over how her sex and medical history would be recorded during an emergency.

  • Detransitioner seeks to restore her original legal sex in Ireland.
  • She fears official records could hinder emergency medical care.
