Andy Burnham has called for Fifa president Gianni Infantino to resign, saying plans to sell a stake in World Cup commercial rights are “outrageous” and show Infantino is unfit to lead the organisation. The UK prime minister’s intervention is significant because he is described as the first leader of a major country to demand Infantino step down, increasing political pressure over the proposal.

Fifa plans to place World Cup commercial rights in an investment vehicle and sell part of it to investors for $4.2bn (£3.1bn). The proposal has provoked opposition from Uefa and other football bodies, including threats of a boycott by all 55 European member nations, while senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned after calling it harmful to football’s long-term future.
