With GTA 6 Looming Over the Horizon, Sony Says It Has Secured Enough Memory to Meet Its PS5 Sales Targets
Sony says it has secured sufficient memory supplies to meet its PlayStation 5 sales target for the financial year ending March 2027, despite a wider shortage driven by AI data-centre demand and higher component prices. This matters because major releases, particularly Grand Theft Auto 6 in November, could prompt more people to buy or upgrade to a PS5, while the game will not launch on PC.
Sony sold 1.6 million PS5 consoles in the first quarter, around one-third fewer than a year earlier, bringing lifetime sales to 95.3 million. It also reported 125 million monthly active PlayStation users in June, up 2% year-on-year, raised its gaming sales forecast by 3%, and indicated that an unspecified first-party game may have been delayed.
- Sony has memory supplies to meet PS5 targets.
- GTA 6 could substantially increase console demand.
- PS5 quarterly sales fell despite record user numbers.
