Walsh and Rock take silver after final defeats
Northern Ireland boxers Michaela Walsh and Kaci Rock won silver medals after unanimous-decision defeats in their Commonwealth Games finals. Walsh’s result is particularly significant as it gives the 33-year-old a medal at each of her four Games appearances, while Rock secured a podium finish at her first Games.
Walsh lost to Jaismine after a slow opening round and could not overturn the deficit despite pressing for a stoppage late on; three judges scored it 29-28 and two 30-27. Rock, 23, was beaten by England’s Sacha Hickey, with four judges scoring the bout 30-27 and one 29-28, while Jon McConnell remained in contention to win Northern Ireland boxing’s first gold of the Games.

The Commonwealth Games bring together athletes from countries across the Commonwealth to compete in a range of sports, including boxing. Boxers are matched by weight class, and judges score each bout; a unanimous decision means all the judges named the same boxer as the winner.
Michaela Walsh and Kaci Rock represent Northern Ireland in boxing. Walsh had competed at three previous Games, while Rock was making her first appearance, so a medal marked different milestones for each. Their results also formed part of Northern Ireland’s wider campaign, with boxer Jon McConnell still in contention for gold.
