The US Department of Justice has threatened to sue a Maryland school district after alleging it secretly facilitated a student's gender transition without informing or obtaining consent from the child's parents. In a letter dated 29 July, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon accused Anne Arundel County Public Schools of adopting a blanket policy of withholding information about students' gender identity from parents except where "legally required", giving the district seven days to change course or face litigation.

The letter, sent via America First Legal, argues the district's practice breaches parents' constitutional rights and is not covered by exemptions under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Dhillon's letter states that parents were denied access to their child's full educational record while information about the student's gender identity was withheld, prompting the department to demand the district end the district-wide nondisclosure policy or face a Justice Department lawsuit.
