Thailand’s prime minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has pledged stricter gun laws after a 14-year-old student killed eight people and injured 22 in a shooting near Bangkok. The attack has renewed concern about firearm access and weak enforcement in a country with high civilian gun ownership, despite already having strict penalties for illegal possession.

Police say the teenager first killed his 73-year-old grandfather and 74-year-old grandmother, then took their legally registered gun and ammunition to Debsirin School in Nonthaburi. He allegedly killed five teachers before taking his own life; a student later died from injuries. Anutin proposes limiting the carrying of guns in public to government officials on duty, while Thailand is estimated to have 10.3 million civilian firearms, including about four million illegal weapons.
