BBC Sport · 5 hours ago

Lionel Messi missed Inter Miami's 2-1 Leagues Cup defeat by Monterrey after the death of his father, Jorge, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 68 following a long illness. Jorge Messi was not only his father but also his agent from the age of 14, and had played a pivotal role in his career, including helping secure his move to Barcelona as a 13-year-old in 2000.

Tributes poured in from across football: Inter Miami held a minute's silence, players wore black armbands and team-mate Rodrigo de Paul revealed a Messi shirt after scoring. Barcelona observed silence before a friendly against Nottingham Forest, while Boca Juniors, River Plate, the Argentine Football Association and Paris St-Germain all offered condolences. Fans left flags and flowers outside Messi's childhood home in Rosario, Argentina, where Jorge died in hospital.
