A Brazilian footballer's exuberant goal celebration went badly wrong when he leapt over advertising boards and fell down a hole leading to the away dressing room, in a moment that went viral. Jacy Maranhão, a Coritiba defender, escaped without serious injury, though the effort proved pointless after the video assistant referee disallowed the goal in the Série A match against Chapecoense, which Coritiba went on to win 2-1.

Maranhão, 29, had run towards home fans in the 41st minute with the ball tucked under his jumper to mark his impending fatherhood, only to misjudge his jump over the hoardings at the Estádio Couto Pereira and plunge down the tunnel. He was forced off as a substitute two minutes into the second half after twisting his foot, though he said afterwards he was fine, joking that centre-backs rarely score. It was not the first such mishap at the stadium: a Coritiba striker fell down the same hole while celebrating a goal in 2014, though that effort stood.
