Google has confirmed that its Gemini app has surpassed one billion monthly active users, becoming the 14th Google product to hit that milestone and matching OpenAI's ChatGPT, which crossed the same threshold in June. CEO Sundar Pichai announced the figure via X, describing Gemini as one of Google's fastest-growing products, as the AI assistant race between Google and OpenAI continues to intensify.
The one billion figure refers specifically to the standalone Gemini app and excludes Google's AI Mode in Search, which has separately topped a billion monthly users globally. Google said 63% of Gemini users engage with the assistant via voice, and the app now generates more than 150 million images a day, with over 100 million active users on iOS. The milestone follows Q2 2026 earnings showing over 950 million monthly users and tripled daily active users year-on-year, and comes as Google rolls out Gemini 3.5 Flash and prepares for its Made by Google event, where further Gemini-powered Pixel features are expected.
