‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ To Pass $700M U.S. Wednesday, Will Catch Dinosaur Pic ‘The End Of Oak Street’ In Its Web – Box Office Preview
Sony/Marvel's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is set to cross $700 million at the US box office on Wednesday, becoming only the seventh film ever to reach that milestone domestically and the fourth Marvel Cinematic Universe title to do so. The film continues to dominate cinemas in its third weekend, which matters for both Sony and Disney as it cements the movie among an elite group of blockbusters and puts pressure on new releases entering an increasingly crowded late-summer market.
As of Tuesday, the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film had an estimated running total of $671.2 million, having made close to $17 million on Monday alone. Its third weekend is projected to bring in between $57 million and $72 million, a drop of 50-60% but still enough to top the charts. It faces fresh competition from Warner Bros' dinosaur film "The End of Oak Street", starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, expected to open between $20 million and $25 million, as well as Paramount's "PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie" and Angel Studios' "The Brink of War" starring Jeff Daniels as Ronald Reagan.
In short
- "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" set to pass $700M domestically on Wednesday
- Film remains box office leader in third weekend despite a steep decline
- New releases "The End of Oak Street" and "PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie" open this weekend
Explained simply
Spider-Man is a Marvel superhero whose film rights are held by Sony, while Disney owns Marvel and makes the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. The two companies have worked together on several Spider-Man films, bringing the character into that shared series of superhero stories.
Box-office totals measure ticket sales, and reaching $700 million in the United States is a rare mark for a film. Strong ticket sales can affect how cinemas schedule a film and shape expectations for other releases competing for audiences, including new films from Warner Bros, Paramount and Angel Studios.
