Comcast’s new home protection setup uses Wi-Fi to detect motion
Comcast has launched Xfinity Shield, a new home security platform that folds home, family and cybersecurity protection into a single app, with Wi-Fi at its core. A free component called Wi-Fi Shield, available to all Xfinity Internet customers, includes an opt-in feature called Wi-Fi Motion that detects movement in the home by monitoring changes in radio frequency signals between the Xfinity Gateway and connected devices, without using cameras or recording footage.
Comcast says a typical Xfinity customer has 36 devices connected to Wi-Fi, and any unexpected disturbances trigger an instant alert through the Xfinity app. Wi-Fi Shield also bundles in malware and phishing protection alongside Family Settings, letting households create individual profiles, assign devices and manage screen time, with three selectable modes for home, away and asleep. A paid tier, Shield Select, costs $15 a month and adds an indoor camera, door or window sensors, cloud video storage, 24/7 emergency response and AI-powered recognition of people, pets, packages and vehicles. Xfinity Shield is available now, with further features planned for next year.
