Indiana University’s Little 500 is an annual bicycle race in Bloomington, Indiana, first held in 1951. It is a relay race in which teams ride laps around a track, and it became a major university tradition.

The race was originally for men. In the early 1980s, four women formed the university’s first women’s team to compete, at a time when women had fewer opportunities in organised sport. Their effort is the real history behind the film.

Anne Hathaway’s Somewhere Pictures and Pigasus Pictures are producing the period drama, set at Indiana University. It follows the young cyclists as they try to enter the race and compete in a sport dominated by men.
