Villa £18m bid for Harwood-Bellis rejected by Southampton

BBC Sport · 4 hours ago

Aston Villa have had an £18m bid, plus add-ons, rejected by Southampton for defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis, as the club seeks fresh recruits following the departure of England international Ezri Konsa to Arsenal for more than £50m. The move reflects a busy summer of turnover at Villa Park, with the Europa League winners having sold several key players since May while continuing to reshape their squad with new signings.

Harwood-Bellis, who began his career in Manchester City's academy without making a first-team appearance, has been at Southampton since 2023 and won his sole England cap in a 2024 Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland. Southampton, who finished fourth in the Championship last season before the "Spygate" scandal ended their play-off hopes, are said to want around £25m for the player. Villa have already sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, Morgan Rogers to Chelsea and Lucas Digne to Paris St-Germain, while goalkeeper Emi Martinez and top scorer Ollie Watkins have also been linked with exits; this week the club brought in goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and full-back Matteo Ruggeri, adding to earlier signings Joao Gomes and Johan Manzambi.
