England Women U20s squad named amid boycott threat

BBC Sport · 4 hours ago

England Women's U20s manager Lydia Bedford has named her 21-player squad for the Fifa U20s Women's World Cup in Poland, despite the ongoing threat of a European boycott of Fifa competitions. The dispute stems from a now-abandoned Fifa Forward Enterprise proposal, which would have created a new company to manage commercial and ticketing rights across Fifa tournaments, with 21% sold to a private investment firm; Uefa led widespread criticism that forced the plan's withdrawal, and some have called for Fifa president Gianni Infantino to resign. The U20s tournament, running from 5 to 27 September, is the first Fifa competition to fall under the boycott threat.

Bedford said her focus has remained on preparation rather than the political row, telling BBC Sport the players have barely discussed the issue. England, one of six European nations in the 24-team tournament, have been drawn in Group B alongside Brazil, Tanzania and Canada, opening against Canada on 5 September. The squad includes North Carolina Courage midfielder Erica Meg Parkinson, who earned a surprise senior call-up in March; the top two in each group progress automatically, along with the four best third-placed sides, with the final in Lodz on 27 September.
