Fivio Foreign Pivots to Christian Rap, But Don’t Call Him a Gospel Artist: ‘I Don’t Want to Put It in a Category’

Brooklyn rapper Fivio Foreign has signalled a move towards Christian rap after a clip of his new music went viral, though he has stopped short of calling himself a gospel artist. Speaking to The Shade Room, he explained the shift as a response to feeling spiritually compelled to "do something for God," while resisting having his sound placed into a single genre category, much as he was previously reluctant to be pinned down as a "drill artist."

Fivio said his forthcoming project blends different musical styles rather than conforming to a conventional gospel sound, describing it simply as music from his heart intended to "praise God" and promote a positive image. He also expressed interest in future collaborations with established gospel acts Mary Mary and Kirk Franklin, and noted he had previously touched on Christian themes on Kanye West's 2021 album "Donda," delivering a standout verse on the track "Off the Grid."

  • Fivio Foreign moves toward Christian rap but rejects the "gospel artist" label.
  • He wants his new music free of genre categorisation.
  • Hopes to collaborate with gospel stars Mary Mary and Kirk Franklin.
