A family of five from Wortley, Leeds, have fled their home after a campaign of abuse from neighbours culminated in an arson attack on their car and a second suspected arson at their house. Jamie Stephenson, 28, and his ex-partner Rebecah Credland, 25, say the trouble began over noise complaints and escalated into threats, damage and insults, before a fire believed to be unconnected also broke out beside their house, close to the bedroom where their three young children sleep. The case highlights concerns about the response of both police and housing providers when families report escalating neighbour disputes and threats to safety.

The couple's Audi A3, obtained through a salary sacrifice scheme, was destroyed in July after someone reportedly poured petrol through a window, gutting the car and melting a child's car seat inside; no suspect has been identified. The family say West Yorkshire Police told them earlier complaints, including a cut wifi wire and rubbish dumped in their garden, could not be investigated due to lack of funds, and that a later threat was deemed a civil matter. Unable to persuade their housing association to rehouse them, even after arranging a swap with another tenant, the family have been left sleeping between relatives' overcrowded homes and, at one point, in a tent, while Mr Stephenson's mother has launched a GoFundMe appeal to support them.
