A Metropolitan Police officer chasing a suspected bike thief through Twickenham, south-west London, continued the pursuit on a bicycle lent to him by a passing member of the public after abandoning his car. Bodycam footage captured the moment the officer, having got out of his vehicle to chase the suspect on foot, was offered the bike by a stranger who asked if he wanted to use it to continue the chase. The incident has been praised by the Met as an example of positive cooperation between police and the public.

The officer accepted the offer and caught up with the suspect on a towpath near Twickenham Stoop stadium, tackling him to the ground and arresting him on suspicion of stealing a pedal bicycle. He was heard telling colleagues he would need to "repatriate" the borrowed bike to its owner once backup arrived. Inspector Jon McLoughlin said the arrest, which followed a bike theft on Whitton High Street, showed how "a small act can make a big difference" and highlighted the value of the public and police working together.
