Microsoft has confirmed a disc-to-digital feature for Xbox, allowing owners of eligible physical games to gain digital access by inserting the disc into an Xbox One or Series X console and launching the game. The measure is intended to support game preservation and prepare for future Xbox hardware, potentially making purchased games more usable across consoles, PCs and cloud streaming.

Testing begins with Xbox Insiders on 31 August, followed by a broader rollout in the coming months. Microsoft says most Xbox One and Series X disc games are expected to qualify, starting with thousands of titles, although publishers control participation and some games will not be supported initially; the entitlement remains tied to the individual disc and transfers with it if it is exchanged or used under another profile.

  • Xbox will let eligible physical games unlock digital access.
  • Insider testing starts on 31 August.
  • Publisher participation means some titles will be excluded.

Microsoft's Xbox division has for years let players build large libraries of physical game discs, separate from the digital games bought through its online store. Digital purchases are tied permanently to an account, whereas discs can be resold or lent, which has kept a market for second-hand games alive on Xbox consoles. The new tool aims to bridge that gap by letting owners turn a disc they hold into a digital copy linked to their account.

This move sits within a wider industry shift away from physical media in gaming, driven by rising costs of manufacturing and distributing discs and by publishers' preference for digital sales. Sony, Microsoft's main rival in the console market, recently announced it will stop supporting physical PlayStation discs altogether from January 2028, making Microsoft's approach notably different by keeping a role for existing disc collections rather than abandoning them.

The feature also ties into longer-running efforts around game preservation, the idea of keeping older games playable and accessible as hardware and formats change over time, and into Microsoft's plans for future Xbox consoles. How publishers respond, since they decide which games qualify, will shape how useful the tool proves to be for players with large disc collections.
