Panic, the maker of the Playdate handheld console, has refunded customers the 19% tariff charge it added to orders after receiving reimbursement from the US government. The company said it could not absorb the import cost because its Playdate margins were low, but returned the money once the Supreme Court ruled the tariffs illegal and refunds became available. The move contrasts with several larger games companies facing demands to repay consumers for tariff-related price increases.

The refunds follow months of administrative work to reclaim the import taxes and process customer payments, according to Panic co-founder Cabel Sasser. Nintendo has received $300 million in tariff refunds but is contesting a proposed consumer class action, arguing purchasers voluntarily paid the stated price; it says most tariff costs were borne by the company. Microsoft, Sony and more than 100 other companies also face similar lawsuits, while major shipping firms have been among the most visible businesses voluntarily issuing customer refunds.
