Meta is updating its AI glasses so their camera stops recording if the LED safety light is covered during filming. The change closes a simple loophole that allowed users to begin recording before obscuring the light, and matters because the LED is the main signal intended to warn bystanders that they may be recorded.

The update follows criticism over non-consensual recordings and wider privacy concerns about the glasses. EU regulators are examining the technology, Germany is considering a ban, and the European Data Protection Board is expected to report later this summer; meanwhile, a proposed US class action alleges Meta misrepresented privacy protections. Meta says only a small minority try to bypass the light and is also advertising the indicator, though concerns remain about modified devices and less obvious ways of dimming it.
