Gamescom Responds To Rampant Reports Of Theft At The Event

Polygon · 2 hours ago

Several indie developers reported thefts of laptops, computers and other equipment from Gamescom 2026 booths, including devices containing game demos and confidential material. Gamescom acknowledged the reports and said the matter had been passed to authorities, but its response drew criticism because it offered no apparent compensation and stressed optional booth security and insurance.

Mimic developer Ryan Laley said equipment was taken overnight from an area meant to have restricted access, while Tessera Studios lost computers, two laptops and a Steam Deck, and iam8bit Presents had two computers stolen. Ukiyo Studios said it experienced a similar theft two years earlier and regarded Gamescom’s overnight security as inadequate; community members have helped replace some equipment, but studios remain concerned about costs and potential leaks of pre-release games.
