A San Francisco couple found a 150-pound limestone sculpture buried in the garden of their Russian Hill home while doing yard work. The unexpected discovery has prompted efforts to identify its maker and history, with the couple planning a public display in the hope that someone recognises it.

Greg Gatwood uncovered the roughly two-foot-wide sculpture in May after first mistaking it for concrete, while Judy Gittelsohn believes it may date from the 1930s. She suspects a possible link to artists associated with the Works Progress Administration, or sculptor Ralph Stackpole and the nearby former San Francisco Art Institute; its inexpensive limestone may support that theory. The couple say it may once have been garden art that became covered over time, and it is due to be exhibited at the American Messenger Gallery in September.
