An animal charity in Jersey has thanked prisoners at HMP La Moye for making feeding and nesting boxes that are helping to protect the island's hedgehog population. The vocational scheme benefits both sides: it gives the Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group practical resources to support local wildlife, while prison staff say it teaches inmates carpentry and health and safety skills that could aid future employment and reduce reoffending.

Inmates made 20 feeding and nesting boxes from reclaimed pallet timber, sold by the charity for £20 and £25 respectively, with all feeding boxes already sold out and only a few nesting boxes remaining. The project began after a chance meeting between a prison officer and charity representative Dru Burdon at a vets, and now forms part of a wider prison programme that also includes refurbishing bikes for Age Concern Jersey, restoring memorial benches, and growing produce for charity and the prison kitchen.
