“It’s just such a huge galaxy to fill”: Don’t expect any Total War: Warhammer 40,000 sequels, but do expect lots of updates that builds upon its sandbox
Creative Assembly has confirmed it has no plans to make sequels to Total War: Warhammer 40,000, its upcoming sci-fi entry in the long-running strategy series. Instead, the studio intends to support a single game with ongoing major updates, treating it as an expanding sandbox rather than splitting content across multiple releases, a departure from the approach taken with the previous three fantasy-set Total War: Warhammer titles.
Speaking to PC Gamer, battle product owner Dave Petry said the aim is to build "the true experience" as one continually growing sandbox, comparable to the Immortal Empires mode in earlier Warhammer games, so players are not "siphoned off" into only experiencing part of the content. The game will launch with four playable factions – Space Marines, Aeldari, Ork and Astra Militarum – with further additions such as Space Wolves, Genestealers and Chaos Space Marines under consideration for the future. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is due for release in 2027 and is available to wishlist on Steam.
