39 Years Later, an Iconic X-Men Villain’s First Appearance Is Suddenly the Hottest Comic on the Market
A copy of Uncanny X-Men #221 from 1986 has become the most sought-after comic on the collector's market, driven by renewed interest in the X-Men following the success of X-Men '97 and Marvel Studios' upcoming live-action reboot. The issue marks the first full appearance of Mister Sinister, the sadistic villain who is set to be played by Adam Driver in the new film, making it an appealing entry point for newer fans wanting to trace the character's comic-book origins.
According to collector's site GoCollect, a near-perfect copy of the issue can now fetch up to $150. Written by Chris Claremont with art by future Image Comics co-founder Marc Silvestri, the comic also introduces the Marauders, Sinister's assassin group, whose "Mutant Massacre" storyline saw them slaughter the Morlocks and cripple Angel, later transforming him into Archangel. Notably, the Marauders' ranks included Gambit before his X-Men days, and the issue features Madelyne Pryor, later revealed to be a clone of Jean Grey created by Sinister, tying into storylines involving Cyclops and his son Cable that have yet to be explored on screen. Marvel's X-Men reboot is due in cinemas on 5 May 2028.
