Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek has revealed that Valve deliberately "leaked" its own trailer for Left 4 Dead 2 in 2009 after the ESRB refused to approve it for official release. The disclosure, made in a recent video discussing cut lines from the game, sheds light on how Valve manoeuvred around the ratings board's objections to the game's violence, gore and profanity, at a time when the studio was also facing pushback from regulators in Australia and Germany.

Faliszek explained that rather than submit the trailer for approval, Valve seeded it online as an unofficial leak; the footage later became the game's actual intro cinematic. This followed an earlier clash that year, when the ESRB objected to a promotional image showing a zombie's hand with three fingers bitten off, forcing Valve to alter it. The manoeuvre helped the game secure a mature (M) rating rather than the more restrictive adults-only rating given to Manhunt 2 in 2007. Left 4 Dead 2 launched in 2009 but was not released in Germany until 2021, after Valve successfully petitioned authorities there to re-evaluate the uncut international version.
