The result matters chiefly for Universal, as Odyssey continues climbing towards becoming the studio's highest-grossing film ever, while Spider-Man remains a commercial powerhouse in its own right, cementing its place among the biggest films of all time.

Odyssey, starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Tom Holland, has now amassed a global cume of $1.627 billion, closing in on Jurassic World's $1.67 billion to become Universal's biggest film ever; its eighth weekend was boosted by Imax preview screenings in Japan and continued strength in Korea, China, Germany, the UK, France, Australia and Italy, where it holds records for Universal or ranks among each market's biggest Hollywood releases. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, meanwhile, has reached $2.4 billion worldwide ($1.485 billion international, $917.8 million domestic), keeping it as the third-highest-grossing film ever behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame, and it is on course to overtake Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the biggest domestic release of all time, though catching Endgame globally looks out of reach.
