Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar, officials have announced. Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi said he had been suffering from a heart condition, and that funeral arrangements are under way in the village of Kizimkazi. Ameir, an agricultural academic who kept a low public profile, became Tanzania's first-ever First Gentleman when Samia took office in 2021.

Ndejembi said Ameir died at 08:00 local time on Monday at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital, and led tributes to the family. Kenyan President William Ruto and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema were among African leaders offering condolences. Ameir married Samia in 1978, before her political career began, and the couple had four children, including a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who serves in Zanzibar's House of Representatives.
