Liberal Democrat MP Anna Sabine used a microphone to speak in the House of Commons as she continues recovering from a nerve injury sustained during thyroid surgery earlier this year. The Frome and East Somerset MP, her party's culture, media and sport spokesman, used the device while responding to a Government minister's statement on online safety, highlighting an unusual accommodation being made to allow her to continue her parliamentary duties.

The surgery damaged Sabine's recurrent laryngeal nerve, which controls the vocal cords, the same type of injury suffered by BBC broadcaster Nick Robinson after a 2015 operation to remove a lung tumour. In a July statement following her surgery, Sabine said Robinson's recovery had given her confidence, and that she had undergone a period of voice rest with follow-up care from doctors and speech therapists at Royal United Hospital in Bath. She said she expects to need practical adaptations when Parliament resumed in September, working with House authorities, and insisted the injury would not stop her representing her constituents.
