A 26-year-old woman on trial for causing the death of her friend in a Lamborghini crash has claimed he was tampering with the car's controls and triggered a "boost" moments before the fatal collision. Humaira Batool denies causing death by dangerous driving after the rented Lamborghini Urus, which she was driving, left the M62 near Ripponden, West Yorkshire, at 120mph, struck a barrier and overturned, killing passenger Mohammed Shaan Hussain, 20, in the resulting fire. The case matters because it centres on a stark dispute over responsibility, with prosecutors dismissing Batool's account as a "distasteful attempt" to blame her dead friend, while the defence argues no one may be criminally responsible.

The court heard the pair had swapped seats before the December 2022 crash, with Batool reaching speeds of up to 143mph in dark, wet conditions, and initially lying to police by claiming she had been asleep until CCTV proved otherwise. She told jurors Hussain said "watch this, watch this" and pressed buttons causing the car to "surge", but a Lamborghini expert told the jury no such controls exist that could cause sudden acceleration. Batool suffered burns to 10 per cent of her body and a shattered tibia; jurors were expected to retire to consider their verdict following closing speeches.
