‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ Voice Actor Reveals Who Inspired His Take on Logan

Polygon · 1 hour ago

Liam McIntyre, the voice actor behind Logan in Insomniac Games' *Marvel's Wolverine*, has said his performance was shaped by every previous take on the character rather than any single one. Speaking to Polygon while promoting his new animated series *Golden Axe*, McIntyre explained that he studied performers such as Hugh Jackman, Cal Dodd and Steve Blum to understand what made their portrayals distinctive, before finding his own way into the role rather than imitating them directly.

McIntyre described the process as building on "the shoulders of greats", drawing on Wolverine's long history and the game's script to work out which parts of himself fitted the character. His performance, which brings out a more vulnerable side to Logan alongside the character's usual anger, has been praised by critics even though *Marvel's Wolverine* itself has received lacklustre reviews overall, ranking among Sony's weakest-reviewed PS5 exclusives. The game launches on PlayStation 5 on 15 September, a day before *Golden Axe*, in which McIntyre also voices Ax Battler, premieres on Paramount Plus with all ten episodes released at once.

Liam McIntyre voices Logan in Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine, a PlayStation 5 game due out on 15 September. Wolverine, also known as Logan, is a long-running Marvel character who has previously been portrayed on screen and in games by actors including Hugh Jackman, Cal Dodd and Steve Blum, each bringing their own take on his mix of rage and vulnerability.

McIntyre is also known for voicing Ax Battler in the animated series Golden Axe, which arrives on Paramount Plus a day after the game's launch, with all ten episodes released together. Both projects have put him in the spotlight recently, prompting him to discuss how he approached playing such a well-established character.

This background matters because it explains why McIntyre's comments on shaping his performance are of interest: Wolverine is one of the most recognisable characters in the Marvel universe, and how a new voice actor interprets him affects how the character is received in a major new video game release.
