Kylian Mbappé leaves Nike after 20 years to sign boot deal with Swiss brand On
Kylian Mbappé has ended his 20-year relationship with Nike to sign a boot deal with Swiss brand On, representing a significant setback for the American sportswear giant that has dominated the football market. The 27-year-old France captain has also become a shareholder in On, reflecting his commitment to the company's ambitious expansion into football, which includes the appointment of Thierry Henry as football director.
On, previously focused on running and tennis, unveiled its first football boots this week, the Lightspray Prototype, which will be available to the mass market from next year before expanding into training kit. Mbappé's departure is particularly damaging for Nike, which saw elite player Lamine Yamal leave for Adidas two years ago, as Mbappé had been the face of numerous Nike advertising campaigns since joining at age nine. Nike and Adidas currently dominate the football boot market with over 40% of players at this summer's World Cup wearing their products, whilst challenger brands such as Under Armour, New Balance and Skechers have struggled to gain significant market share.
