An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and wounded Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, a Venezuelan illegal immigrant, during a traffic stop in Austin, Texas. The incident has sparked significant controversy, with civil rights group LULAC calling for him to remain in the United States as a key witness to the shooting, whilst local officials and a Democratic Representative have demanded an independent investigation into the officers' use of force.

According to Garces Perez's attorney, he was delivering food for DoorDash when an unmarked ICE vehicle sideswiped him; unaware it was law enforcement, he made a U-turn before being pursued and shot in the back of the neck. She further alleged that he did not receive adequate medical care, with a bullet remaining lodged in his back for hours without pain relief before he was transferred to an ICE processing centre overnight. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Garces Perez is an illegal immigrant from Venezuela with a final removal order who entered the United States during the Biden administration and is currently in federal custody pending deportation.
