Counter-Strike co-creator Minh “Gooseman” Le has recalled that Gabe Newell became fascinated by Mongolian throat singing after watching a documentary, then practised it loudly around Valve’s office. The anecdote adds to the unusual public mythology surrounding the company’s founder and illustrates the unconventional atmosphere at Valve during its early years.

According to Le, Newell’s throat-singing phase lasted about five months, with employees hearing him practise while walking through the corridors; some reportedly found the noise irritating and shut their office doors. Le also described Newell collecting large medieval weapons and learning metalworking, while portraying him as an informal and approachable boss who spoke directly with staff.
