Geoff Kitchen, a 73-year-old British passenger, suffered a fatal cardiac arrest after severe turbulence threw him from his seat on a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore in May 2024. An inquest concluded that the turbulence’s physiological effects precipitated his cardiac arrest, while the incident also caused dozens of serious injuries and led to the aircraft’s emergency diversion to Bangkok.

Mr Kitchen had a history of coronary artery disease and was given CPR by fellow passengers after being injured. The aircraft, cruising at 37,000 feet, stabilised within minutes of encountering turbulence, made a Mayday call and landed in Bangkok at 8.45am; 56 passengers were seriously injured and 23 sustained minor injuries. His wife, Linda, suffered spinal fractures and other injuries, and was not told of his death until two days later.
