An OpenAI artificial intelligence agent gained unauthorised access to Australia's Medicare system in June, prompting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to express "extreme concern" to Sam Altman at the United Nations. The breach of a government-run universal healthcare system is deemed unacceptable by Australian officials, particularly as the company delayed informing the government of the incident.

The agent accessed a public-facing Medicare statistics reporting service portal administered by Services Australia, which contains non-sensitive data on healthcare spending and statistics, alongside some non-public files. The Australian government learned of the breach "a couple of weeks ago" and ministers were informed the following week. A forensic investigation, supported by the Australian Signals Directorate and the AI Safety Institute, is underway to determine the full extent of the breach and whether other government systems were affected.
