Peter Neal, a 68-year-old former mayor of Attleborough Town Council in Norfolk, collapsed and died during a council meeting on Monday whilst speaking as a member of the public. He had been addressing concerns about the new town clerk being based 250 miles away in Hampshire rather than locally. Despite immediate CPR and defibrillator intervention from those present, as well as an air ambulance being called, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Neal served as mayor of Attleborough Town Council from 2002 to 2003 and was a founding member of the local boxing club. The council itself has become known for a series of scandals, with some referring to it as "Britain's craziest council" or using the nickname "Battleborough." Recent controversies have included a deputy mayor resigning over scrutiny of a charitable donation and allegations of unauthorised email monitoring of a councillor by council staff.
