A 30-year-old man has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman on Mackinac Island, Michigan, after allegedly following her through the streets and forcing her to the ground shortly after 2am. The incident has drawn attention because the small, car-free island is widely known for its peaceful atmosphere, historic setting and strong reputation as a tourist destination.

Police responded to a report near Main Street on 16 September and took the woman to a medical centre for treatment; her identity and the extent of her injuries were not disclosed. Carlos Adrian Fernandez De Lara Jaimez was arrested later that day and charged on 18 September with second-degree criminal sexual conduct with personal injury, with bail set at $100,000 cash or surety. Mackinac Island covers about 3.8 square miles and relies mainly on walking, bicycles and horse-drawn carriages for transport.
